The Heart Behind Emerald Wood
How People Inspired the Guardians
When I first began creating Emerald Wood, I had no idea where to begin. As I brainstormed, the world continued to grow, and I realized that something much more personal was taking shape.
The Emerald Guardians were not created from imagination alone. Many of their qualities were inspired by the people I love—their personalities, strengths, struggles, and the special ways they have touched my life. Little by little, pieces of my family found their way into Emerald Wood.
That is the true heart behind this realm.
Every Guardian has a purpose, but behind the magic, armor, and special abilities are qualities that matter in real life: love, courage, resilience, wisdom, compassion, and the importance of standing together. Emerald Wood became a place where those qualities could live on and where the people who inspire me could become part of something magical.
Ember — The Heart That Holds Everyone Together
Ember is the leader and heart of the Guardians. She is the glue that keeps everyone together, the voice of reason during moments of peril, and a devoted friend who will always stand beside those she loves.
In many ways, Ember reminds me of my mom.
My mom is the youngest in her family, yet she has always been one of its strongest and most sincere hearts. She has a way of keeping people connected and grounded, even when life becomes difficult. That sense of devotion, strength, and togetherness became an important part of Ember.
To me, leadership is not simply about being the strongest person in the room. Sometimes it means being the person others know they can turn to. That is who Ember is.
Atlas — Knowledge Is Its Own Kind of Strength
Atlas is endlessly curious. You will almost always find him with a book in hand, reading, studying, and trying to understand the world around him.
He believes knowledge helps him see situations more clearly. When a problem arises, Atlas wants to troubleshoot it. If he does not know the answer, he will do everything he can to find it.
Atlas is strong, but his wisdom is what makes him special.
He reminds me of my aunt. I remember seeing her with a book in her hands, always reading and learning. She is sweet, wise, and willing to help anyone who needs her.
Those qualities became part of Atlas: curiosity, patience, kindness, and the belief that learning can help us find our way through difficult situations.
Ash — Courage Beyond the Familiar Path
Ash is loyal, observant, and fiercely protective.
Emerald Wood is a vast realm. Although the Guardians come from there, much of it remains unexplored. Ash tracks pathways, studies unfamiliar territories, and makes sure it is safe for the others to continue.
He also searches for signs that other inhabitants may be living beyond the areas the Guardians already know.
What I love most about Ash is his willingness to step beyond what is familiar. He protects others, but he is also willing to venture outside his comfort zone.
Ash represents a kind of bravery I often wish I had more of—the courage to step into the unknown without knowing what will be waiting.
Maybe that is one reason I have always loved wolves. They are strong, intelligent, loyal, and fiercely protective of those they consider family.
Rune — The Anchor
I have to begin Rune’s story by saying something simple:
I love dragons!
They are fierce, magical, mysterious, and incredibly beautiful. Though they may resemble enormous mythical lizards, dragons can also be colorful, powerful creatures surrounded by legends, caves, treasure, and crystals.
Rune lives among the crystals of Emerald Wood and uses their energy to help protect and balance the realm.
Beneath the magic, Rune represents something very important to me:
Stability.
Every family needs someone who can help ground everyone when life becomes difficult.
For me, that person has often been my mother. She is my anchor.
That feeling of having someone steady beside you—someone who helps restore balance when everything feels uncertain—is what Rune represents.
He reminds us that strength does not always need to be loud. Sometimes it means remaining steady while everything around you changes.
Pix — Magic Where You Least Expect It
Pix is different from everyone else.
He is the odd machine out.
Created long ago during ancient times, Pix remained dormant until he was awakened by the magic of nature.
Although he is mechanical, the energy that sustains him comes from the heart of Emerald Wood.
Pix works closely with Rune to protect the realm. The crystals within Rune’s cave provide Pix with strength and power, creating an unusual partnership between technology, ancient magic, and nature.
Unlike some of the other Guardians, Pix was not inspired by one specific person in my life.
Instead, he represents imagination itself.
He is a reminder that something does not have to fit perfectly into the world around it in order to belong. Sometimes the things that seem most different are exactly what make a world interesting.
Lira — The Healing Power of Music
Growing up, I loved to sing.
I also wanted to learn how to play the piano, although I never pushed my parents to make it happen.
Music has always felt powerful to me. When we are happy, it celebrates with us. When we are sad, it comforts us. When life feels overwhelming, a song can sometimes express what we cannot put into words.
That healing quality is where Lira comes from.
Lira represents positivity, peace, and calm. Through her music, she sends soothing energy throughout Emerald Wood, helping the Guardians regain their focus when they need it most.
She has become one of my favorite characters because of what she represents.
Lira reminds me that strength does not always come through weapons, armor, or physical power. Sometimes it comes through something as gentle as a melody.
Moss — Caring for What Grows
Moss cares for the greenery throughout Emerald Wood.
Whenever one of the Guardians discovers an unusual plant or finds something growing where it has never been seen before, Moss is the person they call.
He inspects it, studies it, and reports his findings.
Because of this, Moss and Atlas work closely together. Moss investigates the plants growing throughout the realm, while Atlas records the discoveries so the knowledge can be preserved.
Moss is serene, friendly, hardworking, and never afraid to get his hands dirty.
His inspiration comes from someone I remember very clearly: my stepdad’s mother.
She was extremely knowledgeable about gardening. She was fierce and hardworking, and I remember watching her begin working in the garden early in the morning.
She never seemed concerned about getting dirty. She simply worked, cared for what she was growing, and rarely complained.
Those memories stayed with me.
Moss represents that same quiet determination—the willingness to nurture something, work hard, and understand that beautiful things often require patience and effort before they can grow.
Bram — The One Who Figures It Out
Bram is the wielding master of Emerald Wood.
He understands tools, how things work, and which tool is needed for a particular problem.
His inspiration is my husband.
He is a true do-it-yourself kind of person: resourceful, strong, and almost always willing to figure something out instead of giving up.
When someone needs a hand, he is ready to help.
That resourcefulness became the foundation for Bram.
Bram reminds me that being useful to others is its own kind of strength. Sometimes the person who saves the day is not carrying magic or a sword.
Sometimes he is carrying the right tool.
Wisp — A Light in Difficult Moments
Wisp is the light bearer and healer of the Guardians.
Whenever someone is hurting—physically or emotionally—Wisp is the person they seek.
She is sweet, caring, brave, and remarkably levelheaded during a crisis. When everyone else is frightened or unsure of what to do, Wisp remains calm, assesses the situation, and helps neutralize the problem.
Wisp was not inspired by one specific person. She carries qualities from several people I have loved and cared about throughout my life.
She also represents something more personal.
In many ways, Wisp is someone I wish I could be.
Life has brought many difficult moments, and I know how challenging it can be to remain calm and hopeful through them. Wisp represents that inner light—the part of us that continues searching for healing even when things are hard.
She reminds me that bravery can also look like compassion.
Sometimes helping someone through darkness is one of the bravest things a person can do.
Cairn — Finding the Way Forward
Cairn is the wayfinder.
Together with Ash, he scouts the undiscovered areas of Emerald Wood. While Ash focuses on tracking and protecting the path, Cairn studies the logistics of what lies ahead.
He gathers information, evaluates the terrain, and determines what the Guardians will need if they continue into a new area.
Cairn is thorough, resourceful, and reliable.
Like Wisp, he was not inspired by one specific person. He is made from bits and pieces of people I have encountered throughout my life—people who knew how to prepare, solve problems, and find a way forward.
I think every family needs people like Cairn: the ones who look at a difficult situation and quietly begin figuring out what comes next.
The People Behind the Guardians
As I look at the Guardians now, I realize that Emerald Wood has become more personal than I ever expected.
Some characters carry obvious pieces of people I love. Others represent qualities I admire, memories I want to preserve, or characteristics I hope to strengthen within myself.
Maybe that is why creating them has meant so much to me.
We all carry pieces of the people who have walked beside us: a lesson from a parent, a memory of someone working in a garden, a person who always seemed to have a book nearby, someone who could fix almost anything, or a voice that brought calm when everything felt chaotic.
Even people who may no longer be part of our everyday lives can leave something behind that continues growing within us.
For me, some of those pieces became Guardians.
Somewhere along the way, Emerald Wood stopped being simply a fantasy realm I was creating. It became a reflection of family, memories, imagination, and the qualities that help us move forward.
That is the heart behind Emerald Wood.
As the realm continues to grow, I am beginning to realize that every Guardian has much more of their story left to tell.
Until next time, welcome to Emerald Wood!
